Join IxESN Wageningen to Belgium and discover the beautiful cities of Antwerp and Ghent!
Belgium is a country where both Dutch and French are native languages. At least, depending on the region where you are. The northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium is called Flanders (in Dutch: Vlaanderen). The southern region is called Wallonia (in Dutch: Wallonië). Even though Flanders has its own characteristics, there are overlapping aspects of culture, language, politics, and history with the Netherlands. Antwerp and Ghent are located in the Dutch-speaking portion of Belgium.
Antwerp is the largest city in Flanders and is also the most important port city in Belgium. In addition, Antwerp is also one of the top destinations for a day or a weekend trip among Dutch tourists. Antwerp finds its popularity in a very large number of facets, which are not easily summarized. The city has a lot to offer and is rarely boring. The Dutch have been coming to this historic city on the River Scheldt for years, to go out, shop and to enjoy all the beauty that the city has to offer. The biggest attraction is the historic city center. Shoppers can go all out in its many shopping areas. It is no coincidence that Antwerp is considered the ultimate shopping city in the Benelux. In ancient squares such as the Grote Markt, you can enjoy a delicious, authentic Belgian pint.
Ghent is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province and after Antwerp the largest municipality of Belgium. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It is a port and university city with many things to discover!
